REMEMBERING ERIC, OUR gentlemanly HOUSE CAT

Holdsworth House’s dapper and beloved feline, Eric, was incredibly popular with guests. This once stray kitten made his home in our halls and was adored by staff and guests alike. Eric became a local celebrity, spending his days graciously greeting guests at reception and stealing the spotlight in wedding photographs. Sadly, Eric passed away in 2024 as an elderly but magnificent gent and his ashes are buried in the hotel gardens.

Today, Eric is immortalised as 'Gentleman Cat' by the talented illustrator Jo Bird, in a whimsical nod to the hit BBC/HBO series Gentleman Jack which was filmed locally and written and directed by friend of Holdsworth House Hotel, Sally Wainwright OBE.

This delightful illustration is used on a number of the Holdsworth House at Home merchandise items, which are perfect for fans of Gentleman Jack, cat lovers and admirers of Anne Lister’s story.

THE HISTORY OF HOLDSWORTH HOUSE

Holdsworth House is a captivating Grade II* Listed Jacobean manor dating back to 1633, with roots reaching as far as 1272.

Once home to several notable families and connected to the Brontë and Anne Lister circles, our beautifully preserved building showcases original stone mullioned windows, beamed ceilings, and grand fireplaces.

Topday the manor is Halifax's best hotel hotel, privately owned and managed by The Pearson Family since 1962. The house retains its historic character while offering modern comforts and legendary hospitality. Curious to explore more of its rich story and charming features? Click below.
