At Holdsworth House, history isn’t just something we talk about—it’s woven into the very fabric of our walls. And sometimes, we’re lucky enough to have that history walk through our doors. In January 2025, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Ken Windle, a remarkable 102-year-old (soon to be 103 in September 2025!), back to Holdsworth House in Halifax where he played such a vital role in the manor’s transformation.

Holdsworth House – A place steeped in history and Ken’s family craftsmanship.
Ken’s connection to Holdsworth House goes back to the 1960s when the manor first opened its doors to the public as the Cavalier Country Club, the new venture that paved the way for the luxury hotel we know and love today.
As a young man, Ken worked for his family’s joinery business, A Windle & Son. Talk about a ‘local business’ success story! They were entrusted with all the joinery work during the challenging winter of 1962/63—one of the coldest on record and with no central heating at Holdsworth House. Imagine the dedication and grit it took to work in those conditions!
Ken fondly recalls being put in charge of the Holdsworth House project by his father. He developed a strong rapport with the house’s new owners, Freddie and Rita Pearson. His memories paint a vivid picture of the charismatic duo who shaped the destiny of this historic manor.
“Freddie was a great raconteur and there were always people in the bar who delighted in his stories of his life in London during the war and his friendship with the Maharaja of Baroda.”
Ken’s admiration for Rita Pearson’s business acumen is clear. “I thought she was marvellous, such an astute woman. She had everyone under control, including me.” He recalls accompanying her on numerous trips across the country in his van, sourcing unique furniture and décor for the burgeoning business. From shields and swords for the Barn (now our elegant Stuart Room) to oak furniture and pictures.

A Treasure Trove of Memories and Discoveries
Ken’s recent return visit to Holdsworth House, for afternoon tea with his family, was more than just a trip down memory lane. He was particularly eager to see the ‘Witches cupboard’ which featured on the BBC Antiques Roadshow. We learnt that the hinges were crafted by Ken himself over sixty years ago, and they are still just as strong as the day they were installed.
In preparation for Ken’s visit, we delved into our archives and unearthed some incredible treasures: the original 1963 invoice for the joinery work by A Windle & Son, and even the Cavalier Country Club membership form of Ken’s father, Albert! The invoice is listed over eight pages and included work for a cocktail bar and powder rooms, with the bill totalling 602 pounds and 14 shillings (around £13,000 in 2025). These pieces of history, now shared with Ken’s family and pictured below, are a testament to the enduring connection between the Windle family and Holdsworth House.
A Legacy That Lives On
Ken’s story is a reminder that history is made by real people, with real skills and real passion. His contribution to Holdsworth House, both through his craftsmanship and his memories, is an invaluable part of our story. We are so pleased to have shared this special moment with Ken and his family, and we look forward to celebrating his 103rd birthday with him in September!
