Wedding ceremonies at Holdsworth House

Ten places to say I do at Holdsworth House

Beneath two-hundred-year-old ash trees. Outdoors in a courtyard. In a cosy Jacobean hall, a panelled Regency room, or a bedroom where the Beatles once slept. Every one of our wedding ceremony spaces is yours for the day, because we only ever host one wedding at a time.

How many guests will you invite?

Outdoor wedding ceremonies, West Yorkshire

Outdoor & Garden

Four outdoor ceremony spaces, from a lawn for 120 to a stone gazebo for ten. Each has an indoor room set aside in case of rain, so you do not need to stress about the weather.

The Gardens

A wooden gazebo stands between a pair of weeping ash trees that were planted two hundred years ago, and that is where you say your vows. The lawn seats 120 in front of it, the manor house is the backdrop, and the parterre sunken garden is a few steps away for the photographs. On a summer afternoon there is nowhere at Holdsworth House that feels more like the day you pictured.

Wet weather: the Stuart Room is held for you. Drinks afterwards on the lawn or in the Colonnade Courtyard.

The Barn Courtyard

Across the paddock from the house, this was the working stable and tack yard. Restored stone, the original barn alongside, and a courtyard that takes almost any layout you can draw: rows facing the barn doors, a circle, a long aisle. It is the rustic, relaxed, barn-wedding feel that so many couples come looking for, without giving up the manor house for the rest of the day.

Wet weather: the barn itself. Drinks in the courtyard, then the walk back across the paddock to the house.

The Colonnade Courtyard

The courtyard sits at the heart of the house, enclosed on every side by three centuries of stone, with the Stuart Room through the doors. Sixty seated under the open sky and another twenty standing along the colonnade. Because it is the centre of the building, the whole day can turn around it: ceremony here, drinks here, the evening spilling back out here under the lights.

Wet weather: the Stuart Room, through the doors. The shortest walk in the house.

The Stone Gazebo

Built in 1633 and listed Grade II* for its national importance, the gazebo was restored with funding from English Heritage, who judged its fireplace a Victorian addition to a Jacobean shell. Inside, the plaster was repaired in places and deliberately left open in others to show the stonework, and decorative artist Linda Brill stencilled the interior in 1998. It holds ten people, which is the point: the two of you, a registrar, and the handful who matter most, in the oldest room on the estate.

Wet weather: the Hall or the Mullion Room, a short walk back to the house.

The main rooms, 40 to 120

The grand rooms

Three rooms for a ceremony of 40 to 120, and the newest one is the one couples are already asking about.

The Regency Room

Hidden alongside the Barn Courtyard, and unlike anything else in the house. A breathtaking foyer for your guests to gather and take a glass, then double doors into a panelled room made for a ceremony of up to sixty. It brings something to Holdsworth House that it has never had: a touch of the Regency, and couples who have seen it have already started calling it the Bridgerton room.

You can see it now on a show round. The first ceremonies are from May 2027, and the diary for it is open.

The Stuart Room

The largest room at Holdsworth House and the one most of our bigger weddings are built around. A ceremony in here for 120, then the room is turned while you have drinks in the gardens or the halls, and you come back to it set for your wedding breakfast. The Stuart Room opens onto the Colonnade Courtyard, with its fireplace lit in the evening and seating and blankets out, so the day moves between day and night, inside and out, without anyone noticing the join.

Also the wet-weather room for the Gardens and the Colonnade Courtyard.

The Abraham Brigg Room

A ground-floor ceremony room that suits a wedding of 40 to 80: big enough that nobody is squeezed in, small enough that the person at the back can see you smile. Many couples marry here and then move to the Stuart Room for their wedding breakfast and the evening, so your guests see more of the house as the day unfolds.

Every couple, every kind of ceremony

Marriages, civil partnerships, and everything you want it to be

Holdsworth House holds civil ceremonies and civil partnerships for every couple, and the rooms are licensed for legal marriage ceremonies. Celebrant-led, humanist and non-religious ceremonies are welcome too. What happens in the room is yours to decide.

Civil ceremonies

Your registrar comes from Calderdale Register Office; you book them for your date and time, and we take care of everything else in the room.

Celebrant and humanist

Write your own words, choose your own music, marry in the gardens or the courtyard with a celebrant, and keep the legal part for another room or another day.

Blessings and renewals

A religious blessing after your legal ceremony, a vow renewal, a second marriage or the ceremony you never had the first time. The same spaces, the same team.

The small rooms, two to forty

Small rooms, full of character

For ceremonies of two to forty, the rooms with the most history in the house.

The Hall

The main hall of the house, with its wooden floor and the original staircase, which makes the entrance every couple has dreamt of. Forty guests, four hundred years of history in the panelling around them, and the gardens behind you for the celebration drink and the photographs afterwards.

The Ayrton Room

A first-floor room that was once a bedroom, and not just any bedroom: the Beatles slept here in 1964. For a wedding of up to twenty it is intimate, warm and very private. Many couples marry in the Ayrton Room and dine next door in the De Aldworth Room, so the whole day happens on one landing.

The De Aldworth Room

The Ayrton Room's neighbour, and its twin in history: the other room the Beatles took in 1964. Up to twenty for a marriage or civil partnership, and the natural place for your wedding breakfast if you married next door. Two first-floor rooms, one wedding, no other weddings in the house.

Two more, for the very smallest ceremonies. The Mullion Room, with its fireplace, and the Panel Room are both on the ground floor and both beautiful for a ceremony and a meal for a handful of guests. Ask about them on a show round, or say so in your enquiry and the team will suggest which suits your numbers.

The practical part

Questions couples ask about the ceremony

Can we legally marry outdoors?

Yes. Outdoor civil ceremonies have been legal in England since 2022, and the Gardens, the Barn Courtyard, the Colonnade Courtyard and the Stone Gazebo are all used for them. The registrar simply needs to be able to see and hear you, and the weather has a room held in reserve.

What happens if it rains?

Every outdoor space has an indoor room held for it on the day, so the decision is made on the morning, not months before. The Gardens and the Colonnade Courtyard fall back to the Stuart Room, the Barn Courtyard to the barn, and the Stone Gazebo to the Hall or the Mullion Room.

Can we marry in one room and eat in another?

That is how most days here run. Ceremony in the Abraham Brigg Room and dinner in the Stuart Room; ceremony in the Ayrton Room and dinner in the De Aldworth; ceremony on the lawn and everything else inside. Because we host one wedding a day, every room is yours to move between.

Who do we book the registrar with?

Calderdale Register Office. You book the registrar for your date and time once the date is confirmed with us, and we make sure the room, the music and the timings are ready for them. Celebrant-led and humanist ceremonies are booked directly with your celebrant.

When can we book the Regency Room?

The room can be viewed now on a show round and the first ceremonies in it are from May 2027. It holds up to sixty guests for the ceremony and pre-ceremony drinks in its foyer; the wedding breakfast and the evening are in the main house.

Choose yours in person

The only way to pick a room is to stand in it
