Join historian Angela Clare for an evening revealing the legacy of Anne Lister. Angela is the Collections Manager for Calderdale Museums Service, which looks after Shibden Hall the former home of Anne Lister in the 1800s.
Having studied Anne Lister at great length, Angela has in-depth knowledge of Halifax’s most famous diarist. Angela also wrote the insightful book Anne Lister of Shibden Hall.
In addition, Angela is an actor and appeared in Gentleman Jack working alongside Suranne Jones and Sally Wainwright. Writing as Clara Barley, Angela’s new book, The Moss House, is the fictional tale of Anne Lister and Ann Walker’s passionate, forbidden relationship and their retreat to the Moss House – their private sanctuary away from an unaccepting world

Anne Lister (1791-1840) of nearby Shibden Hall in Halifax, left a legacy of over five million words in her diaries, revealing a fascinating woman- scholar, landowner, business woman, traveller, mountaineer and lesbian. Discover how Anne Lister’s story has been hidden and then shared over the last two centuries across literature, film and in the museum of Shibden Hall, including the latest Gentleman Jack TV series.
With inspiration gleamed from the hotel’s collection of 18th and 19th century hand-written recipe books, we’ve devised a five-course tasting menu. The themed dinner includes an hour-long talk by Angela, split between courses, with a Q&A.
