Introducing Claire Nicholl, Wedding and Events Manager at Holdsworth House

Claire Nicholl, Wedding and Events Manager at Holdsworth House Hotel in Halifax

“I’ve worked at Holdsworth House for over 30 years and during that time I’ve helped plan hundreds of weddings. We are an exclusive venue, meaning we host just one wedding per day, and that focus makes a real difference to how each wedding feels. We host around 120 weddings each year, so there are very few questions my team and I haven’t been asked before. I work closely with our Head Chef, operations team and our General Manager every day to make sure everyone is aligned and every wedding runs exactly as it should.”

What drew you to the world of weddings?

“From the start, the role really suited me. I’m good with people and a stickler for detail, which is the ideal combination for wedding planning. My colleagues joke that I have a photographic memory, as I tend to retain names, dates, numbers and all the small details that matter so much to couples.

I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else. After nearly 30 years of arranging weddings, very little catches me out, and there’s no challenge that my team and I can’t work through together.

Weddings create a genuinely positive working environment. People come to Holdsworth House to celebrate, and no two days are ever the same. It’s not a desk job either – I’m often on my feet, meeting families, walking the house and helping couples picture their day.”

What do you think makes Holdsworth House unique?

“There’s no denying that Holdsworth House is a beautiful building, and I genuinely believe the gardens are among the best you’ll find at any wedding venue. But what really sets us apart is the experience of the team.

When you have such a consistent and knowledgeable group of people working together, that confidence naturally carries through to couples and their guests. It allows everyone to relax, knowing they’re in safe, capable hands.

I also think our independence plays a huge part. So many of us have been here for a long time, and we truly put our hearts and souls into what we do. There’s a real sense of pride and care in the way we work, because Holdsworth House feels like a family business in the truest sense.”

How do you get to know couples before their big day?

“It always starts with an initial meeting where we talk through your ideas. At that stage, my role is really to listen. I want to understand what matters to you, what you’re hoping for from the day, and any special details you already have in mind.

I’ll show you around the hotel, offer guidance where it’s helpful, and answer absolutely anything you want to ask. Once your date is booked, we schedule further catch-ups and your wedding menu tasting. By the time the wedding arrives, we usually know each other very well.

I’m proud that many couples feel comfortable opening up to me. People often come to me for clear, detailed advice or simply reassurance. Sometimes I’m also trusted with surprises or personal information, and I take that responsibility seriously. I’m always professional, completely discreet and fully supportive.

In the lead-up to your wedding, you’ll naturally meet all the teams within Holdsworth House. At your tasting, you’ll get to know the kitchen and restaurant team. When choosing accommodation, you’ll meet our housekeepers. And our reception team, who know the house inside out, will always be there to help.

By the time your wedding day arrives, the operations team have been fully briefed and everyone is ready. It’s wonderful to see it all come together, like a well-rehearsed piece of theatre, with every part working in sync.”

What do you think makes the perfect wedding?

“It’s when you, as a couple, can completely let go and be present in the moment.

Inevitably, things may change along the way because people, much like the weather, are unpredictable. But when you trust the team around you to deliver your wedding day, you’re free to relax and enjoy it as it unfolds.

When you can look back and remember several genuine ‘wow’ moments, rather than worrying about logistics, that’s when you know you’ve had the perfect wedding.”

“When you get married you expect a hiccup or two along the way, but this didn’t happen. We celebrated our marriage here and were delighted with the professionalism and attention to detail provided by all the staff at Holdsworth House. We cannot praise the venue highly enough, and the comments we received from our guests were equally positive.”

Why should someone book their wedding at Holdsworth House?

“We’ve been hosting weddings for over 60 years, and not many venues can say that. Holdsworth House is well established, independent and here for the long term. That experience really matters.

We’re flexible, knowledgeable and genuinely good with people. As beautiful as a venue can be, it’s the interaction between guests and the team that truly makes the difference on a wedding day.

We work hard to make the planning process straightforward and reassuring. That’s why our main wedding package is called the Pain Free Package. Some venues focus on what can’t be done. We take a can-do approach and will always look for solutions to help bring your ideas to life.”

“The whole team listened to everything we asked for and nothing was ever ‘no’ — it was always ‘yes’, or a thoughtful compromise. We’d like to mention a few key members of the team. Claire, our wedding planner, always replied to our many emails and nothing was ever too much trouble. Chris made the day run smoothly and was always quietly there if we needed him. Olga looked after us brilliantly in the lead-up to the wedding and is a real credit to the team. Shannon on reception was always smiling and incredibly helpful. Head Chef Adam delivered a first-class dining experience every time and even agreed to make our custom petit-fours. And finally Tracey, who was the glue that held the whole day together and kept everyone calm and organised.”

What is your number one planning tip?

“Book your venue early — and your
registrar
if applicable. Once those two key elements are in place, everything else can fall into place in its own time.

In the current economic climate, securing your venue early is especially important. It gives you clarity, reassurance and protects you from future price changes. Once you book your wedding at Holdsworth House, we guarantee that your agreed venue price will not increase.”

Where’s the best photo spot?

“There are so many Insta-friendly spots at Holdsworth House that couples are spoilt for choice. If your dress has a long train or veil, photographs on the main staircase are always stunning.

Wedding photographer @her_dark_materials once described our interiors as a ‘photographer’s dream’ thanks to the natural light and the layers of historic detail throughout the house.

My personal favourite spot is in the gardens with the façade of the house behind you — it’s elegant, unforced and completely timeless.”

Any practical advice?

“Food plays a huge part in how a wedding day is remembered, so always make sure your venue includes a menu tasting as part of the process. It gives you confidence in both the quality and the way dishes are presented.

It’s also worth asking whether the venue runs a fresh banqueting service, rather than mass catering prepared in advance. That approach makes a real difference to flavour and consistency. After more than 60 years of hosting weddings, Holdsworth House has learned how to deliver restaurant-quality food for large celebrations, without compromise.”
